My dear Hoda,

I don’t remember the exact date I met her, but I do know it was more than 13 years ago, when they moved to Girona.

We shared many moments together —with her and with Marcos. Sometimes at her home, other times at mine. I remember that during that time, my family and I were studying a Bahá’í book.

But it was more than just sharing. We spent time together that turned into meals, laughter, joyful gatherings, and moments of true quality —to the point that we even spent a Christmas together as family. They had truly become part of our lives!

Throughout all the time we shared, what struck me most about her was the way she listened and uplifted others.

One story I will always carry with me is how she spoke about her mother —how during her illness, her words were: “Why not me?” Her mother never complained about her situation. Hoda would say that her mother believed she wasn’t any different from anyone else —that illness could happen to any of us. Without a doubt, this left a mark on Hoda’s life, so much so that I witnessed how she herself never complained during her own illness. I always admired how Marcos would bring her a bouquet of roses every anniversary of her mother’s passing —a beautiful tribute to her memory.

I fondly remember being there during her pregnancy —we even celebrated Drazen’s baby shower together. His birth was such an exciting and joyful moment. I admired everything she did, because she did it all with LOVE. So much so that I still have many birthday cards and invitations she handmade for my children —true works of art.

Even in her final stage, with little strength but a strong spirit, she continued to create —birthday cards, party favors… One of them she made for my coworker’s daughter’s fifteenth birthday, and it turned out absolutely beautiful and creative.

Being with her and her family during her final stage deeply impacted my life. Despite her illness, she never wanted us to serve her —it was she who served us. She never accepted being seen as “sick.” She always took care of us, talked with us, smiled, and made plans for the future. What a powerful lesson in honoring life!

How will I always remember her?

As someone who was truly loved. With a radiant smile, a heart full of love, and always ready to serve others.

A great woman. A mother, daughter, friend. A woman of faith. 🧡
